Part of the process of closure is not only going through one’s physical files, but also examining one’s drafts. There are 58 drafts on my website, quick glimpses of thoughts that never got shared, or shows that should have been highlighted, and then weren’t. I have forgotten most of these lost moments, but a few linger and during these rare sunny days, I feel like examining them and then letting them go.
2015. A show I never finshing writing about except this.
Stephanie Calvert’s latest show, “ShaHappy me to Pride” on now at Rabbithole in Dumbo, is a mixed-media exploration into her family’s hoarding. After the artist’s mother suffered severe brain damage in a bicycle accident, Calvert returned home to rural Colorado to take care of her and was confronted with her past. Her family had lived in an abandoned schoolhouse, including all the materials left behind from inside her family’s house.
“I started making art from all the things I was ashamed of for so long,” she confesses.
A formally trained painter who previous work focused on rare Earth minerals, Calvert’s work is a journey through her family’s belongings, beautiful and transformative.
2025. 10 years later, I find myself in a somewhat similar situation with my own family. But instead of traditionally making art, lately I’ve been daydreaming about movie ideas crafted from a dusty book found in my parents garage.
The Movie Plot Generator is a 2004 comic flip book and potential creative tool to write scripts. It also reminds me how simple storytelling is.
Here’s some of my favorites I’ve made while listing other screenwriting books on eBay.
