This series of vintage firehoses recall the Birmingham campaign of 1963 when children protesting non violently in Alabama were hosed down by authorities wielding high pressure fire hoses. Now collected in one haunting minimalist display, these banal objects were effective silencers to drown out the children’s voices. I’ve been thinking about this piece for the past 48 hours, a riveting and resonant work by one of my favorite American artists, Theaster Gates. Now on view at Regen Projects in LA through February 25.
