Andrei Koschmieder’s weed sculptures stopped traffic at Art Basel Miami last week. At first I thought they were just specimens in bell jars commenting on the state of the art of plant-life. Then Ben at Real Fine Arts let me know that they’re made out of paper!
Koschmieder scans weed, prints it out, cuts it up, rolls and crumples it, then uses resin to glue it back together…it’s genuinely an objetsmart (a priceless yet often useless, but always intriguing art object.) If I wasn’t on the high security fly list from my recent European travels, I would have bought a vial to take home! Alas, I didn’t think TSA would share my sense of humor!
